[ARCHIVED] CONE ZONES: Downtown and Mount Sopris Drive Road Maintenance

The City of Glenwood Springs is scheduled to begin several road maintenance projects across the City this summer. The first portion of road work is scheduled for July and August on some downtown roads and Mount Sopris Drive.

Road Maintenance Public Notice


The City of Glenwood Springs is embarking on several large roadway maintenance projects over the summer.  The City-wide projects are to include asphalt roto-milling and overlays in the downtown area, roadway replacement along Mount Sopris Drive and chip seal/crack sealing projects over large sections of the City. The first portion of work will begin this week (July 19) and will include milling and overlay of some downtown streets followed by the replacement of Mount Sopris Drive.


Downtown Mill and Overlay Schedule:

  • Colorado Avenue from 8th Street to 100 feet north of that intersection:
    • Milling on July 19, 2018
    • Paving on July 20, 2018
  • West side of Pitkin Avenue from 10th Street to 14th Street:
    • Milling on July 19 & 20, 2018
    • Paving on July 20 & 23, 2018
  • East side of Cooper Avenue from 7th Street to 8th Street:
    • Milling on August 20, 2018
    • Paving on August 21, 2018
  • 8th Street from Grand Avenue to Cooper Avenue:
    • Milling on August 20, 2018
    • Paving on August 21, 2018

Colorado Avenue (July):  During the mill and overlay process “no parking” will be posted on the east and west sides of Colorado Avenue from 8th Street for 100 feet to the north of 8th Street until the milling and cleanup is completed.  Paving will commence the morning of the 20th of July and parking will be back open by the end of the day.  New parking stall striping will be installed soon after the pavement work is completed; temporary no parking signs will be set up as needed to complete the work.

 

Pitkin Avenue (July): During the mill and overlay process no parking will be posted on the west side of Pitkin Avenue from 10th Street to 14th Street until the milling and cleanup is completed.  Paving will commence the morning of the 20th of July and parking will be open by the end of the day.  Any paving not completed on the 20th will be completed on the 23rd of July.  New parking stall striping will be installed soon after the pavement work is completed; temporary no parking signs will be set up as needed to complete the work.


Cooper Avenue (August): During the mill and overlay process no parking will be posted on the east side of Cooper Avenue from 7th Street to 8th Street until the milling and cleanup is completed.  The parking will reopen as soon as possible on the 20th of August.  Parking will be restricted again in this area on the 21st of August for a portion of the day for asphalt replacement.  New parking stall striping will be installed soon after the pavement work is completed; temporary no parking signs will be set up as needed to complete the work.


8th Street (August): During the mill and overlay process no parking will be posted on the north and south sides of Colorado Avenue from 8th Street to the east through the Cooper Street intersection until the milling and cleanup is completed.  The parking will reopen as soon as possible on the 20th of August.  Parking will be restricted again in this area on the 21st of August for a portion of the day for asphalt replacement.  New parking stall striping will be installed soon after the pavement work is completed; temporary no parking signs will be set up as needed to complete the work.


Traffic Control will be set up in each area of town to keep vehicular traffic moving as efficiently as possible. Work within street intersections will be controlled with Traffic Control Flaggers. Pedestrian traffic is not anticipated to have any major impacts in the downtown area or on Pitkin Avenue.


Mount Sopris Drive Replacement Schedule:

  • Mount Sopris Drive
    • Demolition work is scheduled for July 20 - July 30, 2018
    • Asphalt replacement work is scheduled for  July 31 - August 2, 2018

Mount Sopris Drive Traffic Movement Restrictions (July-August):

  • Mount Sopris Drive will be removed and replaced starting Friday the 20th of July.  The first process will be to mill the asphalt for removal and then start full base course removal and replacement. 
  • The project will be broken into two parts: West of Sky Ranch Drive and East of Sky Ranch Drive.  Access out of Sky Ranch Drive will be available at all times during the project.
    • The east end of the project will be completed first (Sky Ranch Drive to Mountain Drive). Access out of Sky Ranch Drive will be normal to the west, and restricted to the east toward Mountain Drive. 
    • The west end of the project will be completed second (Sky Ranch Drive to Old Lodge Road).  Access out of Sky Ranch Drive will be restricted to the west toward Old Lodge Road and the main route of traffic will be to the east and around on Mountain Drive.
  • Residents along Mount Sopris Drive in the work zone will have full access to their homes with only minor delays during the project.  Residents can expect a period of time that the roadway surface will be gravel.
  • Mountain Drive residents will not be allowed to utilize Mount Sopris Drive for the duration of work.
