[ARCHIVED] ConeZone: 27th Street Bridge closure Sept 12-16

Cone Zone

27th Street traffic bridge closure for slide installation scheduled to begin at 6 PM on Sept. 12

The City of Glenwood Springs and Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction announce the closure schedule for the deconstruction of the current 27th Street Bridge and installation of the new traffic bridge. In just 84-hours, from the start of the closure to when the new bridge opens to traffic, our community will be getting a completely new traffic bridge. The bridge slide will be an intricate operation and a major milestone for the project.

The new traffic bridge is being built just south of the current bridge. During this closure, after deconstruction of the current bridge is complete, the new bridge will be moved laterally into place. This is an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technique that is designed reduce impacts to the travelling public, shorten the overall project timeline and enhance roadway safety.

Bridge Closure – Use 8th Street Detour

Beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12 the 27th Street Bridge, S. Grand Ave. intersection, Atkinson Trail and the Roaring Fork River will close and remain closed through the weekend. Crews will be working through the night all weekend. Expect heavy construction machinery and large lights at night. The new bridge is expected to open to traffic at 6 a.m. on Mon., Sept. 12. This is weather dependent.

The 27th Street traffic detour will be via 8th Street during the closure period. There will be no through access at S. Grand Ave. and 27th Street (Buffalo Valley is not an alternate route for CO 82). Significant traffic delays are anticipated, so plan ahead. Local business and residential access will remain open with detours.

27th Street Bridge Slide Closure

Roaring Fork River Access – No through access at 27th Street

During the closure, there is no through river access at 27th Street. All river users must eddy-out at or before 3-Mile Creek or put-in downstream of the 27th Street Bridge. This safety closure is critical for overhead work. Call before you float to hear the latest river status, 618-5379.

Pedestrian Access – Use 14th Street Detour or Cardiff Bridge

During this closure, there will be no pedestrian access at 27th Street. There will be critical infrastructure being ran temporarily across the new pedestrian bridge and it is vital to the project to keep this area secure and safe. The pedestrian bridge will not be open to public viewing because of the proximity to the existing bridge and potential hazards to pedestrians. There will be no pedestrian access through the work area at any time. The pedestrian and bicyclist detours for 27th Street Bridge and Atkinson Trail are via the Old Cardiff Bridge or via the 14th Street Bridge.

Safety Reminders

For safety reasons, individuals are asked to avoid the area during these operations. Due to the constrained site area and the complex nature of operations, there isn’t a great spot for safe public viewing. The construction team will take photos and videos for online viewing. Trespassing or loitering in the area will not be tolerated.

Motorists are reminded to always move over for emergency service vehicles. Schedule and routes are subject to change and are weather dependent. Updates or changes to the schedule will be announced via ConeZone and will be updated on the project information line, 618-5379.
