This week’s update from the CDOT team includes information regarding significant traffic impacts due to the relocation of the Pedestrian Bridge. Please follow the link for a full update.

Project Message from the Public Information Team:
We have an action packed week on the Grand Avenue Bridge project. Please slow for the cone zone in all construction areas.

Night work is planned for the deconstruction of the pedestrian bridge March 8th, 9th and 10th from 8:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. A 500-ton crane is moving into town to assist with the lift and transport. It’s not very often to see this type of construction up close. Also, this week the I-70 detour will be in place on the evening of Wednesday, Mar. 9th. Utility work begins on Mar. 7th on east and west Wing Streets.

Traffic Impacts
NEW: I-70 Detour: The evening of Wednesday, Mar. 9th, I-70 at exit 116 will be detoured onto 6th Street. Both eastbound and westbound lanes will be detoured beginning at 8:00 p.m. through 6:00 a.m. in a one-lane configuration in both directions. I-70 traffic will be detoured onto 6th St. through a temporary break in the I-70 barrier near Yampah Vapor Caves.

The detour is necessary for safety critical overhead work, as the contractor is removing a 108-foot section of the of the Glenwood Springs pedestrian bridge.

I-70 Exit 116 EB Closure: Beginning Friday Mar. 4th at 10:00 a.m. through Monday, Mar. 7th at 6:00 a.m. both the eastbound onramp and eastbound off ramps will be closed. Eastbound traffic will be detoured to I-70 Exit 114. This work is necessary for a storm drain project. ALTERNATE ROUTE TO I-70 EB: Motorists traveling westbound on CO 82 can utilize the I-70 westbound on-ramp at exit 116 or US 6 westbound to exit 114 to reconnect to I-70 eastbound through the roundabouts.

Updated State Highway 82 Grand Avenue Bridge
Grand Avenue Bridge from 6th St. to 8th St. will have periodic closures in each direction from 9:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m. and periodic full closures from 9:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. for the pedestrian bridge deconstruction.

New: Pedestrian Bridge and Transport
Closure on 27th Street and Midland Avenue from 8th Street to 27th Street
On Tuesday, March 8th Midland Avenue will close from 8th Street to 27th Street from 9:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. Local traffic will be allowed to access Midland, but a full closure will occur at approximately west 13th Street as a crane will be staged in the area to relocate the pedestrian bridge. Residents north of 13th Street should use 7th Street and residents south of west 13th street should use 27th Street to access SH 82. Download a map of the 27th Street and Midland Closures.

River Street
Updated: Construction Traffic Only

Interstate 70 Eastbound Exit 116
Eastbound at Exit 116 will be reduced to one-lane traffic. This will be the condition throughout Phase II. Speed limit reduced to 40 mph in this area.

7th St. from Colorado Avenue to Cooper Avenue will be closed for several months as the contractor is beginning utility work in the area.

Parking Impacts
NEW: On Tuesday, March 8th street parking on 9th between Grand Avenue and Blake will be closed. Also, street parking will be closed on Blake from 9th St. to 7th St. The parking closure is necessary for transport of a 90’ long trailer.

River Closures Through March 13

The Colorado River will be closed at the Grand Avenue Bridge Mar. 1 - Mar. 13. On Sunday, March 6th the river will be open, no construction activity is anticipated. The river closure is necessary for overhead crane work.

Glenwood Trail Closure at Two Rivers Park
The Glenwood Trail crossing at Two Rivers Park and I-70 Exit 116 is closed for approximately 4 weeks. Crews are working on a utility project in the area.

Join us for a street BBQ tomorrow at 12:00 pm on 7th St. and Cooper Avenue as we celebrate Milestone 1 and Milestone 2.

Utility Work – Project Start-Up March 7th

Utility work for the Grand Avenue Bridge project includes the relocation/upgrade to the current below ground utilities including new water lines and storm sewer lines. Also, new fiber optic and copper lines for cable television, internet and communications along with new electrical lines for lighting in this area. Excavation will begin on Monday, March 7th on both the west and east wing streets. The utility work is estimated to be complete by early summer. During construction, a 6-foot fence will be installed in the project area to create a barrier from the construction activities. The fencing will be in place until the end of this scope of work for public safety. Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained. This will be an impactful project, please support your local businesses.
