Crane operations for rockfall mitigation begin on South Midland Reconstruction Project

Construction, traffic impacts, and community meetings start next week

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, CO – Construction crews began crane operations on South Midland for rockfall mitigation as part of the South Midland Reconstruction Project on January 7. A seven-ton, 164 ft. tall crane will be staged just south of Hagar Lane for approximately three months as crews work on soil nail walls, rockfall scaling, and cable mesh. Crews are also working on finishing necessary tree removal at the southern end of the project area on Jan. 14 and 15.

Work hours continue to be weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and crews may be working in multiple locations throughout the corridor. Motorists should plan extra travel time on Midland Ave. and connecting roads. In efforts to minimize impacts to the traveling public regular, ongoing alternating single-lane closures are permitted on Midland Ave.; Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays between 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.; Wednesdays between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Weekdays before 7 a.m. and after 6 p.m.; Weekends anytime as approved by the City and during peak times with prior City approval.

Rockfall mitigation is an essential part of project improvements as rockfall events are common in this corridor. The soil nail walls will add stability to the soil and will receive shotcrete facing later in the project. As part of phase one work, crews will also complete rock scaling to remove loose rocks.

About the South Midland Reconstruction Project

This 18-month reconstruction project will better serve the South Glenwood Springs Community for years to come. Approximately one-third of Glenwood Springs residents use the South Midland corridor and currently the Midland roadway is prone to potholes, intersections have poor site lines, the corridor experiences regular rockfall events, there are gaps in pedestrian infrastructure and traffic volumes are on the rise. Approximately one-third of Glenwood Springs residents use this corridor, so that is why it is critical to Keep South Midland Moving. Construction activities began in December 2020 and continue through summer 2022.
