South Midland work will be seven days a week for the next month, impacts limited to one lane closure location on Sundays
Construction work on South Midland is anticipated on Saturdays and Sundays for the next month beginning Saturday, July 10. This is necessary to facilitate critical roadway, utility and sidewalk work ahead of the school year. Construction crews are working intensely in the Park West neighborhood area and on the future roundabout at the intersection of South Midland and Four Mile Road.
“Sunday work is allowed per the contract at the City’s discretion, and we carefully evaluated the project needs and impacts to residents and motorists,” says City Engineer Terri Partch. “We took into consideration the type of heavy civil and utility work that is needed to complete areas near Sopris Elementary and want to do what we can to minimize impacts during the fall school calendar. In addition, regular Sunday work should position the project for a winter shutdown period.”
The pedestrian and cycling trail detours are targeted to be complete by the start of the school year. Critical to the timeline is the installation of the north leg of the 4-mile roundabout which will serve as the school bus connection from Midland Ave. to Sopris Elementary School. Both the roundabout and sidewalk improvements will enhance corridor safety with the improved intersections, wider roadway, and a dedicated pedestrian and cycling path.
New Roundabout Construction and New Utility Infrastructure
The new roundabout construction on the intersection of Four Mile and South Midland is in full swing. Construction activities in the roundabout include grading, installation of new storm drainage and utilities to serve the South Glenwood area.
Stay Alert While Driving Through the Corridor
Motorists are asked to slow speeds through the work zone and pay attention to flaggers and detour signage in the area. Do not text and drive. Texting while driving is very dangerous and can cause vehicle accidents, especially in a construction work zone.
South Midland construction crews are working towards multiple summer deadlines to complete critical roadway improvements before the start of the school year on August 16. All motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are asked to use caution and follow detour signage.

About the South Midland Reconstruction Project
This 18-month reconstruction project will better serve the South Glenwood Springs Community for years to come. Approximately one-third of Glenwood Springs residents use the South Midland corridor and currently the Midland roadway is prone to potholes, intersections have poor site lines, the corridor experiences regular rockfall events, there are gaps in pedestrian infrastructure and traffic volumes are on the rise. Approximately one-third of Glenwood Springs residents use this corridor, so that is why it is critical to Keep South Midland Moving. Construction activities began in December 2020 and continue through summer 2022.
