On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, the City of Glenwood Springs will start replacement of a retaining wall on a portion of the Rio Grande Trail between 12th Street and 8th Street. The repair work is estimated to take six weeks. Due to the narrow work area, construction of this important safety improvement will require an approximately three-week temporary trail closure in the construction area beginning Tuesday.
Pedestrians and bicyclists are advised to follow the detour route along 12th Street, Pitkin Avenue, and 8th Street during wall excavation and installation work. Thank you for your patience during construction.
Project Improvements
This project will replace the failing boulder wall that has begun to break apart onto the trail causing hazards to users. The new wall will be constructed with block matching the downhill walls along the trail. This closure will allow the contractor to excavate the wall area, place geotextile grid, deliver and install the walls while keeping trail users safe.
Timeline and Funding
This project was awarded to Johnson Construction for $199,475. The City is funding this project with funds received from the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) from the Municipal Operations Building Sale and other Parks Trail Maintenance funding.
